Zoo staff have to be quite creative when it comes to weighing pets, according to an article on boredpanda.com.
The task and the level of ingenuity often doesn’t necessarily depend on size. Obviously, a whale and a frog are weighed differently, not to mention the birds.
The process:
Bored Panda’s editorial team contacted a marine biologist at the New England Aquarium in Boston and asked how a mass survey is conducted for, say, a penguin. Emily Greenhalgh explained:
“You can imagine how difficult it is to hold a wild animal still to get an accurate weight. Plastic containers and bowls are essential tools for this. We carefully place the penguin chick in a washed-out flour dish, then quickly place it on the scales, weigh it and release it.”
Playfully, creatively
This is the easy bit. For larger animals that can be taught to jump up or climb on the scales, this is part of their training,” explains the biologist. Those that cannot are left to the creativity of their keeper and zoo experts.
