Christina Applegate is one of the few actresses whose career is as old as her age. She got her first acting job at just 3 months old in a Playtex bottle commercial. And as she plunged deeper into the acting waters in the ’80s, she put a smile on many a face. That’s why now that she’s 51, we decided to take a moment to share some interesting facts about her.
Christina Applegate never imagined a career in comedy.
Although Applegate is known primarily as a comic actress, she never really thought that comedy would be her profession. As she described herself as a teenager, she said she was a “dark child” until she landed the role of Kelly Bundy on the TV series A Terribly Nice Family. The series helped her unleash her comedic talents and allowed her to let loose a little.
She has 6 tattoos.
Each of Applegate’s tattoos has a special meaning for him. One is her mother’s name, another is a braided vine that represents her closest friend, and there’s a secret one she doesn’t want to talk about. But all of them have one main role, to keep her mentally and emotionally stable.
Applegate is a breast cancer survivor.
In April 2008, at the age of 36, Applegate was diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, doctors detected it at an early stage because, as the daughter of a breast cancer survivor, she had regular mammograms. When she learned of the diagnosis, she reached out to friends and family, including Melissa Etheridge, also a breast cancer survivor.
Etheridge shared with Christina a piece of wisdom he had learned in the struggle for his own life. “This is a blessing that has happened to you in your life. Now you can start over, and now you can change everything – the way you handle things in life, the way you react to things. Fear can hurt you. Stress can hurt you. This is a time when you have the opportunity to change the way you eat… everything you do.”
Now, thanks to her friend, Applegate considers the diagnosis a blessing. After a lumpectomy, 6 weeks of radiation and a positive BRCA gene test, Applegate decided to have a double mastectomy so he wouldn’t have to undergo surgeries and screenings again for the rest of his life.
She became a first-time mother after a double mastectomy.
Christina was a founding member of the singing group The Pussycat Dolls.
In the early 1990s, choreographer and actor Robin Antin first conceived of The Pussycat Dolls as a dance group. Applegate was one of the founding members, and they made their debut in 1995 at Johnny Depp’s Viper Room (a nightclub) on the Sunset Strip. But in 2002 he became the group’s emcee.
